What is the purpose of concept art?

"Concept Art is a form of illustration where the main goal is to covey a visual representation of a design/idea/mood to use in films/video games/animation or comic books before it is put into the final product" - Wikipedia.

Concept art can be in many different styles using many different mediums, for example painting, sketches and of course, pixelated. It is a form of design which is developed over time.

I think the purpose of concept art is to convey initial ideas before a project is put into production, such as character design, scenery and objects. It is a useful process as it allows the artist to show their ideas visually instead of explaining them and leaving it to the imagination.

Genres/Themes~
Artists use many themes to inspire their concept art, such as Steampunk, Realism, Abstract, etc.

Andrew Jones was made famous by his work for the game series 'Metroid Prime' and designing the character 'Dark Samus'. As he was designing for a Sci-Fi game, his concept art reflects the subject very well. Using the neon lines as pencil strokes it creates a unique effect, as well as the background being black, so the colours contrast well. I also like how every idea on the picture contrasts to the other, almost looking completely different and unique from the others. Another feature that works well in this piece is the sections that are zoomed in on, showing more of the detail and the design of the character. ~Sci Fi

Tetsuya Nomura works for Square Enix, doing main character design for the 'Final Fantasy' series, 'Kingdom Hearts' and 'The World Ends With You'. His style combines realistic art with Anime/Manga. His character design is very detailed. I like his use of vibrant colours and outlines on his work, as well as the dark tones to create shadow and darker shades to create definition. ~Fantasy

Yoji Shinkawa is a conept artists for the 'Metal Gear Solid' series. He uses many mediums, such as ink with a felt brush aswell as photoshop. I like how his work is also very detailed, using black as the base and adding detail with highlights and white, showing that bold colours aren't always needed. The traditional methods used makes it unique, as it isn't completely computer generated, making a nice change to all of the modern methods of concept art.
